Perfect Day in Djouce

All this group finished just on the buzzer!
A perfect day for running in Djouce Woods with 82 turning out. Provisional results of the 26th Djouce Handicap below; winner was either Paul Mahon or Larry Stapleton or someone else (a crowd of about 10 correctly guessed their likely finishing time and just about made the buzzer; a bit confusing. All corrections very welcome!).
First women were Anna Heffernan and Maura Matthews, closely followed by  Tressan McCambridge. We had two exceptional runs from juniors - step forward Katie Flynn, out on her own in the junior 5km, and talented newcomer Alex Price who finished in around 42 minutes on the full course.
Our nominated charity was Wicklow Hospice, with Brendan collecting over €600.
Big thanks to helpers Vivian, Gavan, Caroline, Enda, Brendan, Martin F, Tom at the Glencormac Inn, and especially course marker/dismantler Gerry C. Thanks to everyone who donated prizes and to all of you who turned out and made it such a fun day. Here's to next year!

2011 Djouce Handicap on December 27

The revived Djouce H'cap (organised by 3ROC and friends) will take place on the usual 8km Earls' Drive trail around Djouce woods on Tue Dec 27. Starting 11am (or slighty earlier if you think you'll take longer than an hour).
Format is countdown handicap; we start the countdown clock with the slowest starter. You start when you want, ie, if you think you'll run it in 40 mins 12 secs, then you set off when the count-down reaches that time.
The person to cross the line when the time runs out (or immediately after) is the winner. If we have enough helpers, we'll record finish times. There is also be a 5km fun run for children (11am).
Sign on that morning; non-IMRA members won't have to pay the annual reg fee. No entry fee required, but Wicklow Hospice (via Bill Porter) may come along and make a collection. Plus you are welcome to bring a prize.
Prizegiving in the car park, with the winner getting first choice; Glencormac Inn after (tbc).

From Alice's Wonderland Foundation - Thanks!

On behalf of Alice’s Wonderland Foundation, a big thank you to all who took part in the Djouce Handicap 8k. We are so grateful to all and thank you to Eva for suggesting our charity.
We have been speaking with Crumlin Hospital and we hope the building work will start in spring 09 on our new Playroom for the children’s cancer ward so every penny helps at this stage. We went over to the children’s cancer ward (St. John’s) in early December and transformed the existing one into a winter wonderland for the Christmas period complete with 5 ft polar bear and a new flat screen TV. It just lifted everyone’s spirits and brought some smiles in a place where smiles are hard to get. This was only made possible by people like you who so kindly give of their time.
Again our sincere thanks to all

Proper race report!

Winner of the 25th Djouce Handicap on the Earl's Drive trail in Djouce Woods, Co Wicklow was Leanne Geraghty from Bray Runners, who aimed to run the 7.9km race in 40 mins 30 secs.
Leanne, much to her own surprise, crossed the line just three seconds after the countdown showed 00.00.00 - so three seconds slower than estimated. Five seconds faster than expected in 30 mins 55 secs was Djouce regular Jimmy Synnott, whose brother won the very first Djouce Handicap in 1984.
Seven seconds faster than his estimated time was Naas orienteer Don Short. At the other side of the countdown, Ian O'Donnell was ten seconds slower than his estimated time, Jim Fitzharris was 11 seconds slower, while scratch man Peter Savage, with a time of 29 mins 12 secs was just 12 seconds out.
Youngest runner was 16-year-old Jonathan Phillips from Roundwood, who broke 30 minutes for the course. Others to break the half hour were Desie Shorten, Richard Owen, Adam Kelly and Bjorn Ludick. Fastest woman was Aoife Joyce, who had warmed up by taking entries.
Completing his 24th "Djouce" was the one and only Nick Corish of Raheny, 84 years young and just outside the hour. Trail-blazer was Mike Gomm another supervet, who marched around the course in a time not far off his estimated time of 85 minutes - and that was despite a fall on a slippery rock.
Most pessimistic runner of the day by some margin was hill runner Gordon Douglas, who clocked a time half an hour faster than estimated! He wasn't alone in his pessimism: a further 79 ran faster - some of them a lot faster - than expected.
The race, founded by Djouce Djogger Tim Wallis, has no entry fee although many old-timers generously provide prizes. This year these included vouchers for a
day's mountain bike training donated by Olympian Tarja Owens, plus others for free sessions at the Zest gym in Bray.
At the suggestion of regulars, a charity bucket system has operated for the past four years, and this year, a grand total of Eu1,095 was raised for the race's two nominated charities: Stride Ethiopia and Alice's Wonderland Foundation. Magnificent!

LEANNE WINS 25TH DJOUCE HANDICAP

Thanks to everyone who ran the 25th Djouce Handicap; we had great support from Bray and Kilcoole in particular, as well as from IMRA and BHAA regulars, a sprinkling of Djouce Djoggers and Belfield Bashers, and an encouraging number of orienteers, including members of the national junior squad.
About 80 of you were faster than your predicted time, with the winner Leanne Geraghty from Bray Runners crossing the line just three seconds after the countdown showed 00.00.00. Leanne's predicted time was 40.30. Fastest on the day was 16-year-old Roundwood junior Jonathan Phillips with a sensational time of 27.39. Scratch man Peter Savage ran 29 mins 12 secs.
Big thanks to the helpers - Brendan Doherty for his new eco-friendly super-dooper flour course markings; John Brownlee for taking the entries on the day and then taking times at the finish; Aoife Joyce for looking after pre-entries; Jim O'Neill our ever reliable course marshal; Mary Butler for acting as starter and taking numbers at the finish; Paul Kelly for taking times at the finish; John McCullough who helped construct the finish, and everyone for prizes, but special mention to Tarja Owens and Zest Fitness Centre for much appreciate gift tokens.
We raised a fantastic €1,095 for our charities - Alice's Wonderland Foundation and Stride Ethiopia , and hope to make it more at the Christmas Score Orienteering event on St Stephen's Day at Three Rock Woods (all welcome).
